YouTube launches pay TV: why the traditional TV ... - Le Nouvel Observateur

YouTube will soon be paying! No just kidding, just kidding … well, not completely. In fact, Google has announced the launch of pay channels on its video platform. What is it about? Traditional TV channels should they worry? Here are some answers.

No need to make a theoretical course on what YouTube is simply a number of videos on the internet platform. Founded in 2005 and acquired by Google in the following year, YouTube now has one billion users worldwide who consume 6 billion hours of videos of all kinds per month, the last clip of Daft Punk to fall a cat in a pool.

But it is clear that too often the quality is missing:. no built and structured programs and image quality is still often lacking

It is in this context that Google decided to create pay channels on which to broadcast original content and quality (at least what we sell). One can think of stories or series especially. There will be questions proposed from 0.99 dollar per month premium channels.

Traditional TV has good reason to worry

YouTube offers an alternative: instead of paying to benefit from medium chain on the TV for only a few programs that interest you, you will pay to receive channels with highly specialized content that you have chosen to view when you want. A cross between a pay TV and video on demand, all accessible from any connected device.

therefore becomes possible to view content that suits us when you want. Also, if you do not watch videos from the channel to which you have subscribed for a month, you will not be charged. Great is not it? The ultimate accolade for content consumption delinearised against the dependent of a linear TV program.

In addition, this new model will allow the insertion of advertisements in chains. And the money that will be spent on YouTube will not be on TV. With this project, so Google wants to bite your teeth into the cake of television advertising revenue previously reserved for traditional TV channels.

among one billion users, it will not be difficult to convince a small percentage of migrating to this model. Which means less viewers means less advertising revenue. A vicious circle of traditional TV channels will soon have to eradicate otherwise flowing.

Let us moderate

still the launch stating that YouTube will come up against a problem: the speed of internet connections. Take the most obvious example in France: Free and YouTube. As everyone knows, in rush hour, it is very difficult to see videos from the Google platform when you’re at Free. It is therefore likely that Free subscriber does not pay for a YouTube channel.

In addition, YouTube will be entirely dependent on available content on its channels. If nothing interesting is proposed, no pay. Otherwise, it is the TV channels that will be repeated.

How traditional TV should respond

Simply by offering more attractive content with the image of the U.S. networks, which provide strong, imaginative, become ambassadors of their chains internationally. These include HBO offering many series become cult in the image of “Game of Thrones” or “True Blood.”

The alternative is to be part of the adventure YouTube by offering turn pay TV. One can easily imagine a series dedicated to such channel where we would watch several episodes in a row rather than wait several weeks (or even months) between episodes. Note that this is not possible since Netflix with original creations like “House of Cards” and “Hemlock Grove”.

possibilities are very broad and it is not impossible that some YouTube channels, previously free, get paid.

Among the first channels available include for example the presence of a dedicated Franklin turtle (cartoon child) channel and one for cars.

In short, the arrival of pay channels on YouTube is a good thing for consumers who have a wider choice of content. He is free to pay or not to see quality content that excites (cars, kitchens, high tech, sports, series …). In contrast to the TV channels, the arrival is a call to renew. Up to them to listen.

It will be interesting to watch in a few months the number of available and the number of user channels. Moreover, it will also be important to know the average number of videos available chain and notices. Anyway, here’s a new playground:. Open to players and spectators inside the arena if they wish, with all the risks but also the opportunities that this represents
