Chinese scientists have developed a way to get fertilizer from wastewater discharged by the potato processing plants.
China considers the potatoes as a new staple food to ensure food safety, but protein-rich waters discharged by starch processing plants are the source of the pollution of rivers and lakes.
“For years, there is no technical solution to this problem, which has forced the environmental authorities to close over 10,000 small plants. This has undermined the market for potato and farmers, “said Liu Gang, a researcher with the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Lanzhou Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Liu team has developed technologies that reduce by half the chemical demand oxygen effluent from the processing of potatoes, removing starch, fiber and protein.
Thanks to their high content of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, these effluents represent a water ‘ideal irrigation. Three starches companies currently use this technology to purify the water discharged.
China is the largest producer of potatoes in the world, with 5.6 million hectares of crops.
